Welcome to Part 2 of the class. The following 4 weeks focus on the signposts. The directions for all four weeks are on this page--please read them all carefully at the beginning of Week 5. If you have questions, please let me know.
After reading pp. 64-111, you’ll have the background knowledge necessary to to select two signposts to teach to your students.

Notice and Note: Strategies for Close Reading pp. 64-111
Plan for Application
These chapters provide the background necessary for you to start teaching the signposts to your classes. Between now and the end of the class, you’re asked to select two signposts to teach to your students. By the beginning of week 7, you should have a plan posted that identifies the two signposts you’ve selected and explains why you’ve chosen them. You may wish to look ahead to the lesson chapters as you make your selections.
Tell Us Your Plan (Posts by end of Week 6):
Which two (2) signposts will you be teaching to your students? Please provide the relevant context (grade level, course, content/text, resources) for your planned application. Why are the signposts you’ve selected the best ones for promoting close reading with the text(s) you’re using?
NOTE: You will not be posting your plans and reflections on this page--instead post your plans on the corresponding signpost pages. You can access these pages via the tabs at the top of this page.
Interact
Over the course of Weeks 5 and 6, don’t forget to respond to at least one other participant’s plan. Consider responding to a post within a different tab than your own. This will allow you to see how others are working with different signposts.

Apply
Once you’ve posted your plan and read the lessons related to the signposts you selected, you can jump right into your classroom implementation. No need to wait for Weeks 7 & 8.
Reflect (Post by end of Week 8 by replying to your own Plan Posts)
How did it go? What successes, challenges, and/or insights did you and your students encounter? What might you do differently next time?
Interact
Over the course of the two weeks, don’t forget to respond to at least one other participant’s reflection. Consider responding to a post within a different tab than your own. This will allow you to see how others are working with different signposts.
To sum things up, over the course of these four weeks, you will have completed the following tasks:
- Read the assigned and applicable sections of Notice and Note as noted above
- Posted your plan for the two different signposts you’ll be teaching on the appropriate pages (should be completed by the end of week 6)
- Commented on at least on other participant’s plan (should be completed by the end of week 6)
- Taught the signposts you selected to your class(es)
- Returned to the pages where you posted your plans after teaching the signposts and (by commenting on your own post/plan) shared your reflections
- Commented on at least one other participant’s reflection on their plan (needs to be completed by the end of class)
